The Coiba Adventure Advantage

Best Location

We don’t make long runs! We are close to the fish! We stay on Isla Coiba, inside the national park, no other sportfishing operator does. This place is unbelievable. There is practically no one here because it’s so far from civilization. The islands are far offshore in deep water, they are mountainous and covered in primary rainforest. Blue water comes right up to white sand beaches. We don’t need to run to catch trophy gamefish. Roosters, wahoo and cubera snapper are right around the corner from our breakfast table. We fight black marlin and big tuna on the Hannibal Bank less than an hour and half from our evening happy hour on the beach.

ExclusiveCoiba Island Sport Fishing

You’ve got the place to yourselves! We only take one small group at a time. Your party is our only concern. You have two nice boats, an airplane, an American crew, premium open bar, dinner on the beach with table cloths, servers and tiki torches, plus a satellite phone to call in anything we might be missing during your week long fishing adventure.

Best experienced guide

Captain Tom’s been around a long time. Tom was guiding in Alaska for premium fly out fishing lodges before dropping anchor on the prison island Coiba twenty years ago. In 1991 as captain of Phoenix Charters owned by Paul Sanderson, out of Golfito Costa Rica, Tom pioneered Coiba with the first mothership sportfishing operation making regular trips here.

After five years, “Phoenix” was destroyed by fire in Golfito. In 1996, Tom converted Sanderson’s motorized construction barge into a houseboat, drove it 24 hours to Coiba and started flying guests weekly into the prison camp to stay on the Coiba Explorer, anchoring at different locations around the islands, fishing from two sport boats.

For the past fourteen years Captain Tom has operated alone with his 31’ Bertram and 22’ Mako staying in the cabins once known as Club Pacifico. This year he’s imported two young American fishing mates, experienced offshore tournament winners to help out in the cockpit of the 31.
